KUALA LUMPUR: Sunway Group founder and chairman Tan Sri Sir Dr. Jeffrey Cheah has pledged RM100 million annually over the next five years, a total of RM500 million, to establish what is poised to become one of Malaysia's largest education endowments.
Cheah, who also founded and serves as a trustee of the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation (JCF), said the endowment is modelled after global legacy institutions such as Harvard University and the University of al-Qarawiyyin, one of the world's oldest universities. The initiative aims to sustain academic excellence, research, and innovation at Sunway University — in perpetuity.
"As long as I have the privilege of time, I will keep giving. Over the next five years alone, I am committing a total of RM500 million to our endowment.
"We are only at the beginning of our story, but my aspiration is for Sunway University to grow into one of the world's great centres of learning and to continue uplifting lives long after I am gone," he said in a statement.
The announcement was made by JCF trustee and Sunway University pro-chancellor Tan Sri Datuk Seri Razman M Hashim at the JCF 2025 Scholarships and Awards Ceremony, held in the presence of Tengku Permaisuri Selangor, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin.
This year, RM75 million worth of scholarships and grants were awarded, benefitting over 6,700 students through various JCF programmes, including the Sunway–Victoria University Excellence Scholarship, Sunway University Postgraduate Studentships and Scholarship, and the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation Community Scholarship.
During the event, Her Royal Highness presented awards to 100 students, among them recipients of the inaugural Sir Jeffrey Cheah Sunway Medical School Scholarship for the Doctor of Medicine programme, which aims to nurture future-ready medical specialists, and the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation Community Scholarship, which supports students from welfare homes and underprivileged backgrounds.
To date, the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation has disbursed over RM967 million in scholarships and grants and is projected to surpass RM1 billion by 2026, solidifying its status as one of Malaysia's most significant private philanthropic forces in education.
