Transport Minister Anthony Loke said in his speech at the Women In Rail Malaysia Leadership Conference here on July 8 that the government is looking at solutions to revive the HSR, which has been put on hold until May 2020.

Interestingly, Malaysia's Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said at a dialogue with the Malaysia Rail Industry Corporation on April 16 that at the moment, a high-speed rail wasn't necessary, especially if it is just between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.

However, Dr Mahathir did speak about the possibility of a high-speed rail from Johor Baru all the way to Penang, and possibly, the border of Thailand.
Dr Mahathir also said, the country's main focus right now would be to improve its existing rail system through electrification and double-tracking.
